Avant Cinema, is an initiative of Diaspora Media, managed and curated by Danni Karanja. Danni is an active filmmaker in both fiction and documentary genres. He comes with his previous repertoire of projects that have spanned his modest 8 years of filmmaking, starting at first as a dishwasher turned renegade guerrilla filmmaker in the streets of Montreal, Canada, to an indie documentary producer/director and a polished script supervisor on the commercial TV sets of Nairobi.
Avant Cinema seeks to combine Danni Karanja’s love of Karura forest, a sanctuary where he volunteers his time as a media coordinator, and his eclectic library of avant-garde gems of independent world cinema. As it’s name suggests the whole point of “AVANT” is to exhibit films that push the boundaries of what cinema as an art form means to its audience, and to what extent do these films’ technical and narrative techniques affect our collective warped understanding of linear reality.
Y Tu Mama También, at face value is a simple, sexy and fun “road” about two teenage boys exploring what adulthood means with an older woman who has seen too much of it. Yet below the surface Alfonso Curaron, with his use of the roving camera technique, takes us (his audience) beyond the role of a voyeur and into his scenes as a participant of the socio-sexuality and gender bending dynamics at stake in this movie.
This first foray into a public screening of Danni’s extensive collection is showing at Karura Forest on Saturday November 12th from 5pm – 9pm. Come early and relax into the show. Bring a picnic blanket to sit on, something warm and enjoy live music performances and mouth watering cuisine under a starlit sky in the company of friends and indie film lovers.
