Throwback Thursdays: Classic Computer Games

Doom

Doom was a milestone in the video game industry since it laid the foundation for first person shooter video games. Released in 1993, Doom involved the gamer assuming the role of an unnamed space marine to battle demonic enemies on Mars to prevent them from invading earth. If you love first person shooter games like Call of Duty you may want to give this classic a try.

Prince of Persia

This retro game set in ancient Persia, involved the gamer controlling an unnamed protagonist who is tasked with saving an imprisoned princess from the clutches of Grand Vizier Jaffar- the main antagonist. The challenging game was made even harder because the gamer had to complete the levels within a set time limit. Due to the game’s success, several modern day remakes have been made. New gamers may be familiar with newer titles like ‘The Forgotten Sands’ and ‘The Two Thrones’. Why not explore where it all started by playing the original?

Dangerous Dave

The gamer assumes the character of Dave in this game that has gameplay similar to Super Mario. To complete a level and proceed to the next, Dave has to collect gold cups while avoiding various obstacles. Deceivingly, the game seems very easy at first but becomes tougher as the player progresses further.

Pacman

This old game never gets old! Pacman is still as popular today as when it was released over 30 years ago. Proof of this: It is one of the highest grossing games of all time. The game’s mission is simple: Control Pac-Man through a maze, eating dots and once all the dots are eaten, you advance to the next level. Still sounds like loads of fun, doesn’t it?

Contra

This game released in 1987, capitalized on the popularity of 90’s movies like Rambo and Commando. Upon its release, the game received immense popularity because of its simultaneous two player feature that was uncommon at the time. In the game, the player(s) are tasked with controlling two commandos Pfc. Bill Rizer and Pfc. Lance Bean of the Contra unit who are sent to an island to destroy an enemy force being controlled by aliens.

Road Rash

Illegal motorcycle street racers battling it out using all means possible to see who will emerge victorious while being pursued by police officers- that’s what this thrilling game is all about. Road Rash is a classic that motorcycle racing game enthusiasts are sure to still enjoy today.

Super Mario

How could this list be complete without the immortal Super Mario? In this immensely popular game, players assume the role of Mario (or Luigi if playing multiplayer). Jumping on mushrooms to flatten them and shooting at tortoises to destroy them, the player controls Mario through the Mushroom Kingdom while battling these and various other enemies. To complete levels, the gamer has to reach the flagpole at the end of each level.

If you are an avid gamer try out these classics. Yes they may not have the superb graphics that new generation video games have, but you may be surprised to find out they are still thoroughly enjoyable.
