A Mother’s Day Concert by Mathare River

Children having the time of their life on the bouncing castle, teams doing rounds and helping out in the kitchen and other areas, are just but sneak pickets of scenes witnessed in Mathare a few days ago.

Mathare slums crowd, well- wishers, friends and The Good Samaritan Children’s Home and Rehabilitation Centre from having the best time of their lives on the May weekend of Mother’s Day,despite the nostrils-pricking stench emanating from the cowshed’s effluent.

Nairobi’s coolest gang, Haba na Haba Charity Tours, was at it again. The day saw a great afternoon concert performance by the Mathare River. From music, to dance and poetry, the day had its fair share of heartwarming moments.

“What impresses me is how the community owns what is theirs,” said one of the volunteers, “everyone we met kept on telling us the concert was for Mathare!”

The one man band, Krack Wizz was here, Genje Dancers, Mathare’s very own Oscar the ball juggler, Psalms 149 (P149) and performances by Mashaa and Amooh, kept the crowd charged up and asking for more.

When TPK Sons did ‘Warrior’, the Groove Award 2015 nominees got the love they deserved from the crowd.

Another slum star, Manasseh braced the long journey from Kibera to come and perform at the concert.

“All this people are here because they love the kids of Good Samaritan,” notes Haba na Haba Charity’s Andrew Mule.

Viatu Afrika’s Karol Tanduli, or K.T Senior, as many in his circles know him was up and down as always, ensuring those without shoes got a pair.

MC Tumbili’s theatrics kept us in stitches all day. The YMCA Kenya, Kenya Scouts and Friends of Friends partners made the day such a great outing, collecting food items, blankets and other essentials needed by the children’s home.

Cakes by Nelly sealed the day with a cake cutting ceremony and car giveaways for the mothers in attendance.

Hope Fm’s Breath of Heaven show hostess, Sharon Naitore was also here to be a blessing to the kids.
