Garissa Memorial Concert
Unity, solidarity and keeping the memories of the 148 souls who perished during and after the Garissa terror attack is the drive behind this great concert organized by activist Boniface Mwangi and a bunch of volunteers. A mesh of survivor’s testimonies, live music, poetry and spoken word performances are on the menu for today. A quick sampling of the performance line up that includes Sauti Sol, Mufasa, Teardrops, Eric Wainaina and the Kenya Dance Academy proves that the audience is in for a treat.
For long Kenya has been said to be a nation of people with short memories; tragedy happens and it sticks on our feeds for a week before we move on. Today’s concert marks a new era in how Kenyans deal with tragedy and loss.
“We decided late last week to put together a memorial concert as a tribute to the victims and survivors of the Garissa Massacre as a culmination of the week-long vigil we’ve maintained at Freedom Corner, ” the event’s artist curator Abi Rashid Jibril told UP earlier. The entertainment industry seems to be quickly rising and wanting to support such great initiatives.
A post on Boniface Mwangi’s Facebook page reads, “The concert artists have been generously curated by Roots International’s Rashid Jibril. Live Gigs Corporate AV Ltd have provided sound, stage and back line. Securex is providing security, Excloosive-toilets, showbiz productions-lighting, film studios-generator and Lightbox will film the event and upload the concert online. This is a free concert and all of the artists are performing without compensation. To support the concert logistics cost Safaricom Mpesa 0701 222 211 Airtel Money 0731 222 211.”
The event is today (4/14/1015) from 4.00pm to 7.00pm at Uhuru Park’s Freedom Corner and Kenyans are asked to come out in large numbers and show support and solidarity. NTV Kenya will televise the whole concert live.
