Jambojet soars three months on
Jambojet, the brightly coloured pink airline that’s been making waves for its amazing prices has now been running for about three months. As a subsidiary of Kenya’s most utilised airline Kenya Airways, Jambojet sets out to give the best service for cheaper prices. The airline sets itself apart by allowing passengers to travel within Kenya for as little as KES 2,950, that’s almost the same price as a bus ride to the coast. So is this airline worth flying? We caught up with Parul Bid, Jambojet’s Marketing Manager to find out how they’re fairing on since they started flying.
How has business been since you opened? Have people received the airline well?
We are quite happy with the developments. More than 170.000 passengers have been flying with Jambojet so far. A lot of them are first time flyers that react very enthusiastically about the opportunity to fly at low fares that Jambojet offers.
How often do you fly?
Jambojet: Jambojet operates five times a day to Mombasa and 13 times per week too both Eldoret and Kisumu.
Do you plan on expanding where you fly to anytime soon?
Jambojet: For the first year Jambojet will only operate on the above-mentioned domestic routes. In 2015 we expect to start operations to destinations in East Africa.
For us to get the whole picture on how well they’re doing, we also caught up with some passengers to find out what they feel about this new airline. Sharon Wahome had some issues with the airline, particularly the seating arrangements saying, “‘You don’t have to pick a seat to fly with JamboJet.’ That’s what’s written in the Jambojet website. That’s the only thing that put me off about Jambojet. I flew to Eldoret last month. The flight was actually comfortable though. However it was a bit late which is an issue for me .” Although seat picking isn’t a priority, for those of you who just can’t handle that isle seat next to the screaming baby there is an optional premium feature that allows you to pick wherever you want to sit for a small price.
The responses to the airline have mostly been positive however, Ian Njuguna, an avid traveller loves the airline for its economy friendly prices, “I travel a lot for pleasure. I mean a lot. Almost every weekend I’m out on excursions. So I think it’s awesome that there’s finally an airline with fairs that cheap. I don’t even flinch when I’m buying tickets. I really hope they branch out and start flying to more places like Lamu or Tanzania. They’re so convenient and the flights are actually really comfortable.”
Whether you like it or not Jambojet offers the luxury of flying to many who’d never even thought of it. No more 7-hour bus rides to Mombasa that have you regretting that well deserved holiday by the beach. You can fly to anywhere of their four destinations without even thinking about the expenses.
