Track of the Week: ‘Miti Ni Dawa’ by Njeri and STL

Move over Abbas. Move over Bamboo. Move over Johnny Vigeti. Move over Octopizzo, Rabbit King Kaka and even Khaligraph Jones because Female MCs, Njeri and STL are shaking up Kenya’s rap scene. Their performance of ‘Miti Ni Dawa’ during the Industry Nite event at Galileo Lounge left many bowing down.

With this track, the artists have opened up a new debate on the role of women in the rap game in Kenya. While overseas Nicki Minaj is tearing up the airwaves, our female MCs in Nairobi still remain under rated and have to bully their way up the ladder alongside the vicious male rappers.

With talent and flow so sick, these two divas are paving the way for other female rappers in Nairobi.

Lyrical proficient in their lines, an amazing bass-line beat and yes, the right flow and pace, ‘Miti Ni Dawa’ is that track that will get you re-starting it over and over especially the first few minutes, “ Kabete/ Limuru/ Githung-uri… Hii ni ngori.”

Trust us we may not know that much of Kikuyu language but this track has that cross-over appeal that is dynamic. Their performance, pensive and playful poses on stage just makes this duo unique- hats off!

Paving the way for more female representation, Njeri and STL can only hope that eventually the increasing female representation in the Nairobi rap timeline will lead to women challenging the norms of the male-dominated space, not just performing in it.
