UP Music: Behind the Music with Dela
She has got a voice that commands, yet calms, and a bubbly personality like a champagne toast. She is not just a dynamic performer, but also a magnificent song writer and composer with the makings of an international superstar.
Music is in her blood, she is the total package, with beauty and talent. Taurus Musik last week announced their newly signed artist, Adelline Maranga better known as Dela.
UP Nairobi got an in-depth interview with the rising star.
- First of all congratulation on your new signing with Taurus Musik. Tell us how that came about? We’ve been talking about working together for a couple of years now after couple of Taurus Events. So it’s been long overdue.
- For anyone who has no idea how the story began, kindly tell us how you got into music. Like most musicians. I sang in school and church choirs. After high school I did background vocals for a long list of artists. From Chizi to Wahid to Achieng Abura; to mention a few. Then in 2009 I went out on my own, dropping my debut album “Paukwa” later that year.
- From Penya Africa to Taurus Musik, with an in-between album ‘Paukwa’; why now the change from afro-soul to afro-pop? I’m not the same person I was 5 years ago. I’ve been through a lot. Both good and bad. I think it’s changed me. And I want my music to reflect that. Also, my experience at Coke Studio was a real eye opener. I took time after that to experience with different styles of music. I think I’ve found my new sound.
- You are working on new projects now, even with international acts. Kindly shed a light on that. The new stuff I’m working on now is not what you’re used to hearing from me. It’s unexpected. I’ve learnt to not take myself too seriously. I’m just having fun with it now. I’m working with different producers and artists from both within Kenya and outside. I won’t go into too much detail but expect a few collaborations from Tanzania and Nigeria.
- What is on the horizon for Dela? Fame and fortune. Yes and please!!! I’m claiming my blessing! (Laughs)
- Finally, what should your fans expect this Saturday when you return to the stage at the GoDown Gig? New, never-before heard music. Can’t wait to share it with them. So excited. We’re gonna have a partaaay!
