UP Film: Mathare Youth Film Festival 2015, Calls for Submission
This year’s MYFF is set to run through the 22nd - 28th November 2015. By the end of the five day workshop, we’ll have a much clearer idea of the impending films, young directors and even scree talents to watch out for.
Started in 1997, MYFF is the first festival of its kind, giving unfortunate kids the opportunity to tap into their talents by learning how to make photos with 35mm point and shoot cameras.
32 young youths were selected: 16 boys and 16 girls aged between 12 – 17 years old from different slum communities. They documented their day to day activities, such as their involvement in the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA), and shared the photos both locally and internationally in exhibitions.
The exhibitions attracted some attention and the interest grew. Video production was introduced in 2005 and kids are now able make films, drama, short stories in their environs and screen them on a community television.
A key idea in MYFF is to teach filmmaking skills and connect young people by screening films about slum areas around the globe - from Indian slum suburbs and Mongolian ger camps to Brazilian Favelas and South African townships.
Since 1997, the MYSA Shootback program has been one of the most successful art and education programs in Nairobi, Kenya. The Shootback youth are given an opportunity to tell their own stories, using their imagination and developing their skills and creativity through sports.

How to submit your short film:
MYFF 2015 will take place from 22nd-28th November 2015.
This year’s film submissions to be part of the festival can be send to myffworldwide@gmail.com or hand delivered at MYSA Komarock HQ’s. The films should be less than 20mins.
All genre of films are welcomed.
