Artist of the Day: Kevin Oduor
The magnificent Syokimau Railway Station just outside Nairobi bears Kevin Oduor’s sculpture of the famous Kamba prophet, Syokimau. The prophet foretold the coming of the railway then called ‘the Snake’. Kevin is also behind the Dedan Kimathi statue in Nairobi’s CBD. The ‘Wanjiku’ sculpture outside the High Court in Nairobi also forms part of his portfolio. He carries with him over twenty years experience as a sculptor.
Human nature and the animal kingdom have been a source of inspiration for Kevin who would also like to give people the opportunity to see nature as he perceives it. Kevin has done numerous commissions and has had several successful international works; one of the most recent being in Saragossa in Spain.
Other pieces as he puts ‘are all over’. He also fondly recalls a life size buffalo in the Meru National Park; a commission to commemorate the eradication of a disease epidemic that had been attacking cows and buffaloes. He uses fiber glass, metal and found objects having initially started his career working in clay.
