Khenti The F0nkyM0nk

Khenti the F0nkyM0nk is a hip hop head and a DJ specialising in breakbeats and rhymes . He gets his inspiration from funky and jazzy hip hop instrumentals. He’s been a DJ for 3 years. He’s a digger (vinyl collector and the core founder of The Pit happening now (Saturday 12th July) at the Pawa254 rooftop.

We catch up with the hip hop enthusiast and ask him some questions about the cool event.

What is The Pit?

The Pit is more of a consciousness than an hip hop event, Where we share the ‘consciousness’ through the dope music that we feel like playing ranging from underground hip hop, funk, jazz and soul.

How did it start?

It started as street cyphers in Nairobi, a place where hip hop heads could come and hang out… Then we got a venue at Pawa 254 and said goodbye to the streets.

How long has it been going on?

The Pit has been at Pawa since March and for five months in the streets before that.

Where is the name from?

I got the name from The Wire, the series.

What are your thoughts on the development of hip hop in Nairobi/Kenya?

I think what we really need is for the fans to show up to the hip hop events. That’s the only thing that’s lacking, we have hip hop events from Nairobi Hip Hop Rhapsody every Thursday at Ebony Lounge to Hip Hop Hook Up. Support the cause!

The Pit is going on until 6:00 p.m. at Pawa254 don’t miss out! Click here for more info.
