Mchuzi Mix Is So Cool, I Wish I Didn’t Have to Work Mondays

 

 

Last Sunday,The Alchemist hosted Mchuzi Mix - Sunday Best, an event curated by BongoSawa. This was the most perfect excuse to go shopping while participating in some good old fashioned day drinking all at the same time. My personal favourite vendor was Bonkers Kenya by Mvoo the Jeweler. His pieces are so very ‘cool’, just like the teddy bear in a suit and shades in his logo.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mchuzi Mix was unexpectedly magical for me. First thing that happened when I walked into the Yard was the lovely bouncer at the gate asking me for ID. My response was somewhere between flattered“ Me? ID?” and an “I don’t really have my ID but I can pull it up from my work email!” Which I did. And after she had a brief look she told me to have a great night. I then walked to the bar and ordered the specialty cocktail of the night, #MightBeLemonade, a hat tip to the Queen Bee’s recently released visual album.

 

 

Makmende was on the decks, and immediately my hooded jacket seemed so appropriate; I tucked my hands into my pockets and nodded my head to his eclectic mix of old school hip hop and feel good beats. There was a young woman who took to the dancefloor at the peak of his set and decided to bust a move, leaving several revellers (myself included) in awe.

 

 

Soon after Makmende’s set, the young men from E.A. Wave set up their decks and soon revellers migrated to the dance floor, with everyone trying to show off their dancing prowess. Jinku would eventually jump into the crowd and inspire moves that we never thought we had in us.

 

That’s the thing about the atmosphere, there was no clear cut distinction between the entertainer and the entertained. It was so relaxed that any of us could jump on the stage, and any of them could come on down and dance to their own beat. It’s the first time I’ve seen someone DJ from the wrong side of the table.

 

 

The party went on to the wee hours of the morning and I was so glad that the next day was a holiday. But in the event that Mchuzi Mix happens again - I’m afraid it’s going to be a tough start to the week for me.
