The Future:New Track by Moseh Drumist & Masta Luminary
Music doesn’t always need to have a big launch affair, complete with a red carpet treatment and overzealous hoopla. Sometimes it’s just as well to release it quietly, as Moseh Drumist did this week with his new track “The Future”. It’s a song that combines the soulful drums of Kenya with laid back Deep House.
The result is a relaxing and textured journey throughout the entire tracks five minute running time. There aren’t a lot of steep edges, cuts and breaks, instead just smoothness that conjures up images of driving far off into nature. A lot of music ‘purists’ say that house music can’t be soulful, but The Future is helping put those notions to bed.
“The main idea was this,” says Moseh Drumist, “To put Kenyan folklore through a jam.” While it might not quite sound like a story of old, The Future certainly does tell a story, one that can take a discerning listener just about anywhere. Drumist calls the track a song for both the African and Environmental genres, something that sounds like a little piece of a natural backdrop.
It’s a specialized house track, with overdubs and changes on the decks bringing in a smorgasbord of variety and texture. The real highlight of course is the drumming. It fits right in snugly over the first several bars of the tune, sharper in sound but incredibly deep in the pocket for a djembe.
Drumist says that he has some out of the box ambitions for the online track, “I want people to dance while being healed.” It is a hard track not to relax to, and if someone can release some tension while dancing it out to The Future, more power to them.
Everything in the track is an exercise in fusion from the backing track, to the vocal accompaniment to the beat. “The beats are from Nyanza,” says Drumist, “some traditional stuff being jammed on the Djembe.”
It is quite a good vibe that comes through while listening to “The Future”, showing the potential for mash-ups and perhaps for an expanding East African or Equatorial house sound. For now, the future sure does look bright.
