Mungo’s Hi Fi: It’s Strictly Come Dub, With Extra Nairobi Flavour!

Mungo’s who? Before we answer that, here’s a little history lesson. Jamaica shares little with bonnie Scotland, apart from Caribbean cookery staple - the Scotch bonnet chilli pepper. In fact Nairobi shares a lot more with Kingston that Glasgow does!

Then, there’s Mungo’s Hi Fi - a bespoke reggae sound system dedicated to playing music in traditional roots style, fused with electronic and peppered with Scottishness.

Created by Tom Tatterhall and Doug Paine back in the year 2000, Mungo’s Hi-Fi started off in Glasgow, assiduously collecting dub, reggae and dancehall records.

“Our first gig with the sound system was on the back of a lorry at an illegal protest,” Doug told Katy Fentress of Bad Mambo Productions during a recent online interview.

With a burning passion, they took the music to the masses - rocking up a catalogue large enough to land gigs in clubs, bars, festivals and later go on tours.

Bad Mambo Productions have been treating Nairobi music fans to different sounds. Providing a platform for both local and international acts to share the stage has built them a strong following as they manage to cater to Nairobi’s love for music.

Mungo’s Hi Fi brings their hauling experience of playing all over Europe on their maiden tour of Kenya and East Africa. They also plan to build their own studio where they will record and release records under the Scotch Bonnet Label.
