Nai Ni Who: Round Two

Nai ni who? was all over Nairobi around this time last year. The question could be found plastered on billboards, heard on the radio, and mentioned on social media and TV. For 12 weeks Nairobians asked themselves who they are and tried to define themselves as people, as a town, as communities and as Kenyans. After a successful first time celebrating and conversing about Nairobi,Nai Ni Who? is back for more.

From May 11th to August 3rd2013, the 12 week festival explored the city of Nairobi, it’s residents and neighbourhoods seeking a definition of the important role of each in the “community” of Nairobi

Celebrating the good, the bad and the possibilities, Nai Ni Who engaged 12 Nairobi communities and ‘hoods’ exploring the unique aspects of each of them; the identity that stands out while at the same time contributing to the character of Nairobi.

The twelve neighbourhood zones enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate their identity through various shows and events, inviting the rest of Nairobi to enjoy the celebration with them. Through this exploration of Nairobi City, Nai Ni Who invites everyone to enjoy the history, character, flavours, music, and art of Nairobi.

Neighbourhoods such as Kilimani, Buruburu, Kibera and Mathare, amongst others, participated through parades, concerts, public art and other Nai Ni Who? events. This took place in the streets, schools, local government offices, charity centres, social halls, pubs and so on in these areas. By getting Nairobians involved through various cultural activities Nai Ni Who? aimed to create an identity of who a Nairobian really is, covering the issues of identity and belonging.

So who are you? And who is Nairobi. This year don’t miss out on this monumental municipal conversation between Nairobi and its people.
