Nairobi’s Top Matatu Djs and Street mixes
The government tried to do away with the multi-colourful graffiti art on matatus that was often vulgar, political or carrying some sort of social satire. However,being inside a matatu today has not changed- flashy, awesome lighting, music and fascinating stickers and decorations. The ride is still enthralling.
A few still have huge plasma screens, but matatus still remain moving art galleries and moving discos. Today, we look at the matatu deejays who entertain us;
He is the new face of dancehall and riddim mixes. His famous Reggae Road Block and Hot Graba mixes are a favorite to many.
Another new face, Arika’s mixes come with a twist, often incorporating catchy slogans from newss stories that just get the passengers laughing all the way. His inclusion of the famous ‘weka mbegu ya mia tatu na kumi’ is a huge favorite in his Best of Riddimz mix tapes.
Dj Juan, mc Full stop and Simple Simon have been in this business since God knows when. From the days of the Missile mix tapes to their recent BPM-mix tapes.
The outfit is led by the veteran DJ Kalonje. Another upcoming dj from the stable is DJ Kaytta.
The H.B.R 103.5 FM mixes have been downloaded online and are a big hit, especially with hip hop and dancehall lovers.
Mc Teargas, ZJ Heno and DJ Ocrima run this stable. ZJ Heno is quite versatile, mixing hi hop, reggae and dancehall. Then add the voice of Teargas and you get just that; teargased!
The Capital FM’s dj’ Take Ova mix tapes are preferred in most matatus plighting the up market Nairobi.
The Ghetto Radio 89.5fm deejay’s This is Africa and The Magnificent mix tapes are must listen!
The Finas Club Mix tapes, Supa Jam feature veteran dj Latsborn and MC Super Marcus.
Representing #237 Thika town, this is none dj we are definitely looking out for and forward to hear him break. He is starting out but already his mix tapes are a worth listen and a great listen too.
