Santuri Love

For those of you who are still scratching their heads about what the deal with Santuri Safari is, the boys (are there any girls?) behind this killer group of East African DJs and musicians have come up with a short documentary to help you understand what the hype is all about.

The Santuri Safari collective’s main goal is to promote the idea of an East African dance sound that can be as recognisable as prominent South African and Nigerian sounds played in clubs across the world.

Started in Dar es Salaam, the group now extends throughout Kenya and Uganda and has been supporting young and upcoming artists in their endeavours to record, produce and perform high quality music to a crowd.

Using a mixture of electronic and local instruments, the tracks that are produced are seamlessly contributing to this growing East African body of dance and house music.

Last year at the Rift Valley Festival (RVF) in Naivasha, the Santuri Safari team recorded in a bungalow just off-site and then played back the tracks to an excited crowd. This year at the Sauti za Busara Festival in Zanzibar, the group put on live afterparties by the beach every day and, by the looks of it, some of the UP Magazine team that was attending hardly ever made it to the official festival in Stone Town because they were having too much fun hanging with the Santuri guys.

UP Magazine has been happily following the adventures of the Santuri guys over the last year. We loved them at the RVF Launch back in August 2014, danced with them at the many Fambula nights in Naivasha and Nairobi they have performed at, chilled out with them at their pop-up studio at the Sondeka Festival and finally raved hard to them at the Mini UP club back at the RVF 2014.
