Social Media Might Cost you your Job

We live in a generation where social media has become a craze, if not a necessity. However, just like everything comes with its pack of disadvantages, social media can actually turn your world upside down, especially if you are an employee or a potential one.

SOCIAL MEDIA 1

From today, you should know that the misuse of social media can actually cost you your job, not because you are actually using them at work but that you posted something that may have been in bad taste according to your employers. A listing published by the Business Insider actually released 13 people who got fired after a single tweet.

What brings concern is that social media is a personal way of communication and yet corporates and even the government would want to snoop into our affairs to see what we are telling the world. With the advent of technology, a lot is expected in terms of self liberation and expression, something we do not easily get away with when it comes to mainstream media. However, this same medium comes with its limitations especially when it increases the vulnerability of institutions and corporates.

Muthoni Gitau is a social media manager and blogger who says ” It’s unfortunate that people are forced to hide their true opinions just because they work for a company and especially if they do not carry the same belief. Employers should thus stop snooping on what their employees do with their personal accounts.” On the other hand, we can also view the other side of the coin where employees actually do post nasty things about their places of work, which can actually tear down the reputation of the company.

Not so many would agree to this other view as everyone would want to find a place to vent their problems at the end of the day. However, employees should also be careful to not publicly put their employers in bad light. The debate goes on and on and at the end of the day, we should all refer to the ethical principles. Also, laws coming up on the usage of new media should be clearly articulated so as to draw the thin line between what is suable or not.
