UP Movies: The Explosive High-Octane Mad Max: Fury Road Finally Debuts at IMAX
Mad Max: Fury Road was voted Best Film of the Year (2015) by the International Film Critics Federation on Tuesday. Fans of the IMAX Experience finally got a chance to enjoy the critically acclaimed film at the IMAX theatre on Mama Ngina Street, and UP was at the premiere.
On Wednesday, we were invited to watch this high budget Hollywood flick and the audience couldn’t get enough of George Miller’s gut-busting epic film set in a world gone wrong.
Despite warnings from food blogger Sandra Iminza that the movie would scare all the lies out of our bodies, the intense chase scenes, death metal music, fiery explosions and the fearless one-armed chic with nothing to lose, won us over.
Shot in the wasteland desert of Namibia, Fury Road does not have a redundant romantic subplot, a predictable three-act structure or a overly masculine hero who rides off into the sunset - it is just an epic, wild pursuit across the wasteland. This western franchise returns revived as a bizarre convoy-chase action thriller in the post-apocalyptic desert.
Tom Hardy plays Max Rockatansky - a lone wolf and one of the few survivors ofae global catastrophe that resulted in oil, bullets and water becoming rare commodities which the remaining communities now fight over. Years into the collapse of civilization as we know it, Max is captured by the tyrannical Immortan Joe (played by Mad Max veteran, Hugh Keays-Bryne) and taken to his citadel.
Joe’s citadel is populated by an oppressed and sickly people which he rules over by controlling their water supply and by bizarrely supplementing their fluid intake with industrial quantities of mother’s milk, harvested from imprisoned pregnant women.
When the warrior Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) leads the ‘breeders’- read the despot’s five wives in a daring escape — she forges an unlikely alliance with Max, who is also trying to escape.
Fortified in the massive, armored War Rig, they try to out-run the ruthless warlord, his crazy family and henchmen in a deadly nitrous oxide powered, high-speed chase through the wasteland.
“Do not become addicted to water; it will take hold of you and you will resent its absence” an appropriate line for this desert chase film.
At the end of the movie, the real stars of the day emerge: for the movie lovers, it was not Hardy or Theron, but those freaky fuel-guzzlers they drive and crash.
“It is a great movie. We are sorry it took this long to premiere at IMAX but that is because the film had not been picked for our region by the IMAX HQ in Toronto,” noted Mukuria Chege of IMAX Kenya.
If you ‘torrented’ a shoddy copy or bought a cheap version on dusty downtown Nairobi streets, you’re totally missing out on the awesomeness of the 3D IMAX experience. Make your way down to Mama Ngina Street and relive the amazing cinematic piece.
