UP Music: Dela Covers Adele’s Hello, in Swahili

The music business is not one without risks. An artist or label may work with the best sound engineers, producers and even pay millions for a video shoot in the quest to make a world hit song—only for a track to garner less than 1000 hits on YouTube.

 

Then the same singer can record a random jamming session with other musicians, release it and garner over 50,000 hits in a day, taking the world by storm. It happened to Jamaican sensation Konshens on the Talk About Me / Realest track that was a freestyle session in studio. It remains one of his most listened to tracks.

 

Now, the same scenario has happened with Kenya’s Dela with her latest release - Adele’s Hello cover. The Kenyan songstress has added her own personalised twist, singing the song in fluent Swahili. On her Facebook page, she noted, “I got to do this in an evening of randomness with my homies Fancy Fingers, Webi and Andrew Ngatia. Now I get to share it with you.”

Dela’s effortless mastery of her irresistible voice will surely make you want to listen to this Swahili cover over and over again. The team behind the instrumentals is made up of Benjamin Webi on the rhythm guitar and Andrew Ngatia Wanjohi on the bass guitar, and the whole thing was produced by Sauti Sol’s Polycarp ‘Fancy Fingers’ Otieno, who also added his musical prowess to it.

2015 seems to be the year for Dela. Her cover clearly underlines what we already know: she is without a doubt going to be enormous in this music business and her repackage in 2015 under Taurus Musik was the best thing to ever happen to her career.

 

UP had already compiled a list of great Adele covers within Africa, but Dela’s late entry is definitely a welcome entry.
