UP Music: Video of the Week, ‘Miti Ni Dawa’ by Njeri

Her breakout single ‘Nduta’ generated quite a lot of buzz for Njeri. Her performance remains one of the best from the ever growing list of Kenya’s femcees at Industry Nite. Njeri is back again with a massive collaboration with STL in the track ‘Miti Ni Dawa’, which will surely be listed as one of the biggest for 2015.

 

As with any up and comer, pundits were skeptical as to whether Njeri can make the cut and survive the competitive hip hop scene that is dominated mostly by male rappers.

However, her punchlines on Miti Ni Dawa cements one fact: she is not a fad and that if she continues causing the same ripples, we shall be seeing her for quite a while.

 

STL once held the position as Kenya’s leading lady of rap but, as hip hop in Kenya has become more accessible and accepting of more women into the fold.

Director Leon Chege - a new name on our catalogue - was charged with the hard task of bringing to cinema life this track. Opting for an indoor shoot, Leon Chege’s execution of medium crisscrossing to long shots make the visuals a masterpiece.

African themed with the colours of traditional Central Kenya, the costumes are well selected. STL proves herself as the queen of hip hop, dropping bar after bar.

The track was inspired by the controversial Nyeri Women saga. The song was produced by Ace of Fullhouse Music and the video done by Leon Chege.

Hip hop within the city of Nairobi may appear to be largely a man’s game, but with Njeri rocking up a catalogue of tracks, we are sure that this trend is set to change.
