Viral Wednesdays: Teacher Wanjiku on Nyerification and ‘Mti’

Nyeri women are back in the headlines (again). This time they are chopping off their men’s transformers (manhood) and one Teacher Wanjiku is not happy. The street slang for this action of chopping off the man’s private parts is called ‘Nyerification.’

Some radio commentators have attributed this violence to frustrations on the part of the women. The narrative coming from this region is that young men have abdicated their traditional roles and chosen the demon, the liquor bottle, leaving the women all the family duties.

The discussion came up even at the 56th Poetry Slam Africa with reports of Gender Based Violence (GBV) being termed as not one to ignore or crack jokes about. On a positive and funny note, comedian, Teacher Wanjiku has seen men are under siege and she did a video that has gone viral on Youtube, her message on this video that needs one to be quick to decipher.
