Wyre, From Nairobi to Kingston and back with a Kingston Girl

It is Friday night, cold and the streets of Nairobi are half empty, other than the loud music blaring from the CBD nightclubs, the streets are rather quiet even as matatu conductors’ voices calling for passengers seem to fade off into the cold night. A few ladies dressed for the night are hurrying to make it to the night spots and entertainment joints within the city.

The city seems alive as a few street kids take to the street and try to outdo each other with some well-choreographed dance moves that would put Kenya’s respected dancers to shame.

Our walk leads us to Umoja’s stage where we board an Umoinner Sacco matatu. The towered, silver toothed makanga ushers in telling us that his matatu is the latest in the route and that it has the best music.

Fast, yes, outrageously so at times,rough , yet matatus provide the best pick up for a long day. Cozy to the bone, graffiti art speaking off the walls and the best entertainment at a cost for a ride back home from work, matatus are second to none.

As we fast make the turn and hit Jogoo Road, the driver opts for a deejay mix by Simple Simon and off the mix is Wyre the Lovechild’s new hit, Kingston Girl on the Countrybus Riddim. Loyal and patriotic, the conductor at the door swings in and out to the delight of the passengers, even as he takes a second or two to bust a move, dancing to Wyre’s song.

In 2013, the artist snagged the Best New Entertainer award at the International Reggae and World Music Award over fast rising acts such as Chronixx, No-Maddz and Tommy Lee.

Now, he is back with yet a new tune that is putting him on the world platform. A great achievement, Wyre has voiced on Chimney Records new riddim, Countrybus that was released in May, 2015.

Not new to working with Jamaicans, the star has done collaborations with Bad Gal Cecile, Gramps and Peetah Morgan of the Morgan Heritage Reggae dynasty and recently, his last collaboration with Alaine on Nakupenda Pia, saw him travel to Kingston, Jamaica to hoot the video.

Directed by Donisha Prendergast, Nakupenda Pia (Swahili for I love you too) tracks the storyline of a man (Wyre) coming to Jamaica from Kenya to surprise his love interest (Alaine) which leads to a celebration. Now with Kingston Girl, Wyre wants to extend that celebration back by returning this girl to Nairobi, Kenya.
