An Opinion Worth Selling: Camille Storm on Music
“It’s f****’d up that rappers like Mos Def, Common, Lupe Fiasco(!), etc didn’t get that much love when they first came out, but kids these days wanna d**ck ride lyrically average rappers like Kendrick Lamar because he dropped one socially conscious album.” No one will ever accuse blogger Camille Storm of being afraid to speak her mind. She does what any writer worth their salt must, of importance, do: Go big or go home.
The 19 year-old started what was to be a personal blog at 12 years of age, but found herself gravitating towards music. “I realised that music is my life and so that is what I want to write about,” she told us in an interview. Her favorite artist is Lupe Fiasco. He was also the motivation behind the starting of the blog; after hearing a song he had done on skateboarding, Camille realized he had something more to offer that was different from other typical hip-hop songs of the day that dwelled on women and alcohol.
Camille’s gifts are not limited to music. She has interests and ventures in politics, feminism and human rights issues, in addition to being a software engineering student. How does she manage to juggle all these and still produce a kick-ass music blog? “I think I am an artistic nerd,” she says without hesitation.
While for a long time women in this part of the world were brought up to be seen and not heard, paradoxically, it is Camille’s opinionated voice that has led players in the music industry to pay attention to her blog. “People always send me their music to give an opinion on, as they think it is valuable. I always keep it real.” Camille maintains that the real pop, unlike ‘bubble-gum’ pop, is what she talks about on her blog—narrowing in on the lyrics and meaning of the songs.
A loud, strong and sassy writing voice, a good handle on aesthetics, passion that pours off the pages, an opinion that is certainly knowledgeable and informed. So many ways to love Camille’s blog.
