Happy Birthday! Fatuma’s Voice
People need their voices heard. They need a space and a place where they could be themselves without being judged about their fashion, background or race. They need an environment where their thoughts could be respected. For the past twelve months, art enthusiasts; old and young alike, have been converging at Pawa 254 for Fatuma’s Voice, an arts forum for discussion on societal issues that people experience but find it hard to talk about in their homes, places of worship, with their peers and even in learning institutions.
The thematic sessions have opened up many to express themselves through poems, music, dance and participation in the discussions carried out. It is evident that the world is going through a lot of things and everyone has a story, judging from the deep rooted conversations that go on during the forum’s sessions. As more people continue to discover this hub, more talent is getting born, the attendees are getting motivated and inspired with time to rise above their life’s challenges, to speak up against ills that happen in their environment and to offer solutions to the diverse problems that society undergoes.
As hard as it is to raise a child since their first day on earth, running Fatuma’s Voice has equally been tasking. Having it take place on a weekly basis with an average turn out of a hundred and fifty people per session certainly gives you a vague picture of how hectic managing such an event could be. But the managing team has proved that it is possible to be consistent and persistent in making a difference in the lives of people, therefore, though it gets hard sometimes, the show must go on.
Last Saturday, Fatuma’s Voice turned a year old, marking twelve months of amazing experiences and stories, most of which are yet to be told. The fete was attended by a jubilant audience who were grateful to be part of the arts movement that has become a big part of their lives. There was the usual poetry performances which present new perspectives every time, heart-warming music and other fun activities.
The first year anniversary celebrations marked a shift in gears. Henceforth, the event shall be held on Saturdays from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Pawa 254, moving from Fridays. The aim is to give a chance to the many people who wish to attend the forum but are usually unable to on Friday evenings due to such commitments as work, school or distance.
Take the time to attend the forum one of these fine days if you haven’t. Your life will never be the same.
