Throwback Thursdays: Kenyan TV ads from the 90s

Kenyan TV ads have come a long way. On Throwback Thursday travels back in time and looks at some of the most memorable and hilarious ads that featured in as far back as the 90s.

Back in the days, when adverts came out, they made TV worth something to look forward and watch. From an early attempt to create 3D animated ads, to the controversial Trust Condom ads, here is a throwback!

A Trust Condom advert from back in the days.

Barclays.

The dance creativity on the ad made this a special one for many. Other than cartoons, this was the closest thing back then that came to mind when animation was mentioned.

Trust

Forget about how these days condom ads rarely create a fuss. This advert created a fuss back then and many parents were against it.

Quite catchy and creative, the ad explores how a lady gets enchanted by a cute dude to an extent of dropping down her water bottle. He guy bends and uses a condom to seal the broken and leaking bottle. Get it?

Cadbury Kenya - Chocolate Eclair

Cadbury Kenya went ahead and brought the game changer in ads. They got the famous and former rugby referee, the Briton CEO Wallace Garland.

Omo

“Mapua mmh…Mapua mmh…Mpaka nikashangaa”; we all loved the fishmonger Clarice Adhiambo on this ad.

Sportsman

A 1980s TV ad for then leading cigarette brand Sportsman, manufactured by BAT (Kenya). It was trying to whip up national appeal with a flavor of the country’s favorite game, football.

The Swahili version went something like this, “Kuna sigara moja tuu, Kenya maarufu kama kandanda… SPORTSMAN!!! Ni sawa hasa, number 1. KANDANDA!! Ni sawa hasa, number 1.”

Fair& Lovely

This is what every lady who came to the city dreamt of applying on her skin- the best body oil lotion from back in the days.

Blue Band

This ad will take you back before they re-branded the Blue Band margarine. The kid on the ad has got to be the cutest kid back then.

Coca Cola

Coca Cola was then Kshs 20 for the 300ml and with the drop to Kshs 15, this ad showed drinking coke with the fall of price- the cash raining literally on the ad.

JOJO Chewing gum

Jojo chewing gum was the in thing back then.

Knorr Soup

Before Royco, we had Knorr.

Cowboy

This is the advert that made the waiting for a chapatti Sunday or weekend worthwhile.

Vicks Kingo.

oh nostalgia!
