The Hard Rocking Outsiders

It would have been timely to call a band “Last Year’s Tragedy” had it been conceived in the wake of the PEV. However, it was more than six years ago, the six-man Kenyan Metal Rock band, “Last Year’s Tragedy” (LYT) came into existence. “Our band’s name is our constant reminder to learn from our experiences, whether good or bad,” says Ruto, LYT’s keyboard player.

During the interview, the band members are mellow and chilled out, unlike the pounding music they produce. "Our music is an artistic expression and a representation of our energy," says guitarist Jose. While a lot of local rock bands, including Parking Lot Grass and Void of Belonging, have come up in recent years, Nairobi’s Rockers are still fighting for acceptance and appreciation by music consumers.
Ruto says, “People are afraid of what they don’t know. They have walked out on us during gigs. That makes us critique ourselves so as to be better.” LYT’s bassist Mahia remains confident that the band is headed in the right direction. He says, “Just by being consistent, we are using our music to change negative perceptions about rock musicians. Getting an old man tell us once that ‘we’re on to something’ made us appreciate our improvements.”

LYT regularly plays at Choices Bar as well as at various shows and Battle of the Band events. Lead vocalist Chizi says LYT’s mission is to use rock music to promote peace, love and unity. Their song “Generation Light” has a rousing message on the same, despite its startling sounds of booming heavy metal and a growling and high-pitched Chizi.
With their drummer, Stan, currently abroad for studies LYT was forced to play an acoustic set at their first show this year (a peace concert at YMCA in February) yet they still managed to rock the massive crowd. “It doesn’t always have to be loud. After all, creativity isn’t limited,” says Ruto.
