12 Years a Slave Finally Opens in Kenya

It is confirmed! The acclaimed film, 12 Years a Slave, is opening in Kenya this Friday (January 24th at Century Cinemax, The Junction). Kenyans have anticipated the film’s opening, especially because of one of its cast members: Kenyan actress and film director, Lupita Nyong’o. She stars in the film as Patsey – a slave who works at a cotton farm with other slaves, among them Solomon Northup (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor). Lupita’s supporting role in the film has already won her critical acclaim and several awards including Best Supporting Actress at the just-concluded SAG Awards in America.

Lupita makes history as the first Kenyan to be nominated for the coveted 2014 Oscar Awards and British Awards Film and Television Awards (BAFTAs). She is in the category of Best Actress in a Supporting Role and up against legendary Hollywood actresses like Jennifer Lawrence and Julia Roberts. In case you haven’t done the illegal already, and watched a pirated copy, here is your chance to watch 12 Years a Slav on the big screen. It will be showing at Junction Starflix for approximately two weeks.
