Africa’s Amazing Foodie Haunts

  1. SecretEats - South Africa

Pop up restaurants are fast becoming the new way to have dinner- and they’re catching on in South Africa. SecretEats hosts secret dinner parties in different locations with different participants around South Africa a few times a month. The Chefs take over a secret location and don’t reveal it to the diners until the day of the meal.

For tickets, all you have to do is log on to the website and book yourself a spot and details about the dinner- are revealed to you throughout the day via text message.

Once you arrive, you’ll sip on a complementary cocktail (after giving them your secret password of course) and then enjoy a multiple course delectable meal paired with some Great South African wines. The next time you’re in S.A., log on to the site and you might have a lovely surprise for dinner while you’re there.

  1. Gizani - Kenya

This is a concept birthed right here in Kenya’s capital. It takes you into the life of the visually impaired- who work as the waitstaff for the evening. Enjoy your meal in a pitch black setting and get to immerse yourself in the food without knowing what exactly it is you are eating. Using your other senses: taste, touch and smell to enjoy food adds another plane of enjoyment for a foodie.

We must say, it’s definitely different to grab your canape and have a feel before taking your first bite.

  1. Diner-en blanc - Rwanda

Find yourself a some lovely white threads. Put them on and go and have a chic picnic- style gourmet meal with a hundred other people. This idea is just starting to sprout in a few African cities, Kigali being one of them.

Launched with just a handful of friends by François Pasquier nearly 30 years ago, Le Dîner en Blanc de Paris continues to bring together over 10,000 people each year for one night, to enjoy an evening in some of the most prestigious and iconic locations in France and across the world.

  1. Charlie Claw’s -Kenya

In Wasini Island, somewhere on the tip of the Kenyan coast, is a quaint little restaurant that serves only the best seafood, freshly caught and prepared as per request. Take a boat to the island, feast your eyes on the magnificent expanse of blue ocean as the waves rock beneath you.

Ask for crab, lobster or the array of fish swimming about in the ocean and then go snorkeling in the crystal clear water. With stunning views and friendly service, this is definitely the place for the adventure cum foodie.

  1. Trio Toque - Senegal

Michka Seroussi, Amy Regalia and Selassie Atadika have run their restaurant since 2012. Once a month, the serve a 5 course meal at a location that is usually offered by one of their guests.usually their home. A seat at the table would cost you about 5000 shillings.

The nomadic restaurant in Dakar is passionate about what they call African renaissance food- taking what most Westerners would term as snacks (such as peanuts) and transforming them into delicious main ingredients.
