Amani, Lupita and Sauti Sol Rep Kenya at 2014 MTV Awards

Mark your calendars Kenya, and get ready to cast your votes as we gear up for the much-anticipated 2014 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) set to be hosted in South Africa on Saturday 7th June,. The spectacular awards show and music celebration is going to electrify audiences with the best of African entertainment and entertainers. This year, Kenya boasts of nominees: Sauti Sol, Amani and Lupita Nyong’o who were all announced by MTV Base (April 16th).

MAMA 2014 will feature 13 different categories this year including Best Male, Best Female and Best New Act. MAMA celebrates African musicians and achievers who have made the most impact on the contemporary music scene throughout the year, artists who are at the cutting-edge of the thriving music industry here on the African continent. It’s therefore not surprising to Kenyans to hear that Sauti Sol, with the impressive collection of fantastic videos and catchy tunes released this past year, have been nominated for Best Group alongside Big Nux, Mi Casa, P-Square and Mafikizolo. The man-band has already earned themselves two nominations and a win for Most Gifted Video East Africa at Channel O Video Awards. They’ve also performed in the Malawi’s City of Stars Festival (COS) as well as numerous local and international performances.

“Koboko Changu” by Amani feat. Radio and Weasel has been nominated for Best Collaboration (Kenya/Uganda.). The nominations for Personality of the Year have big and powerful names such as Trevor Noah, Yaya Toure, Omotola, Chimamnde Adichie and of course Kenya’s own super star Lupita Ny’ongo, who we really hope wins! Since her Oscar Lupita has become a global sensation, the very first verifiable international Kenyan celebrity. Recently named the face of Lancome, the future looks exciting for the superstar with rumours of a role in the film adaptation of Chimamanda Adichie’s Americanah circulating. She has won so many awards since “12 Years a Slave”, one more couldn’t hurt.

First staged in 2008, the MTV Africa Music Awards has recognised the talent of musicians from across sub-Saharan Africa, rewarding iconic artists such as 2Face Idibia, Big Nuz, HHP and P-Square. The 2014 MTV Africa Music Awards will premiere on MTV Base (DStv Channel 322), MTV (DStv Channel 130) and other partner channels around the continent from June 2014.
