Circle Art Agency’s Sets The Bar – Again!
Business people, artists and collectors gathered at a sprawling converted residence in Lower Kabete on February 28th for Circle Art Agency’s “Paper Exhibition.” Sipping on Absolut vodka cocktails, guests circled the Priya Shah and Edward Chiselhand’s installations at the ground floor amidst the paper drawings, sketches and paintings hung on the walls of the house.
The art exhibited was only of paper or inspired by paper. Over 30 artists explored its versatility from Peter Walala’s paper machѐ bowls made of newspaper cuttings representing meaningless political rhetoric to Samuel Githui’s study of dance using charcoal and chalk.
The glamorous affair sponsored by CfC Stanbic Bank and Absolut Vodka was a night of cultural fusion. Artists and collectors alike mingled at the venue that spans acres of garden and with floating candles lighting the pool. The Circle Art Agency’s first major event, the Modern and Contemporary East African Art Auction held at the Kempisky Hotel in Westlands was dubbed as the biggest art sale in East Africa. This exhibition shows that the enthusiasm and appreciation of Kenyan art by Kenyans is here to stay as almost all pieces were purchased.
