Dining in the Dark Finally Launched in Kenya

GIZANI (Dine in the Dark), Launched its first ever try out in Africa with the press, last Friday at the Tribe, Village Market.This was a dining experience conducted in complete darkness, with the assistance of highly trained visually impaired staff. Started in 2008 by Abdul Camara who has been visually impaired since 2008, he has hoped to bring a similar experience in Africa, one that is already ongoing in Europe. “I am committed into sustaining the idea of blindness that is positive, dynamic and fun in Africa.” He also adds that this will empower the blind, especially in terms of job creation and hence transform their lives.

The idea is this: A group of visually impaired guides walk you through to the dining room, where you enjoy a surprise exotic cuisine with neither seeing those who serve you nor the ones seated around you. Only the voices in the darkness provide you with a familiar feel. Not to mention, there is a surprise musical performance that makes you realize how life is really how you make it, whether in the dark or light.

This experience is akin to what the visually impaired go through everyday and does not have any restrictions to whoever would want to adventure. Abdul says “This concept is like a reverse role, where the blind rule and they are the once to guide and serve you, something that is extraordinary and everyone is welcome to enjoy and have such a wonderful experience.” So if you love creating and sharing memories that will last for a lifetime, this is definitely the next adventure on your list but remember not to carry a camera with you.
