Guru Gang, Sharama ft. Bamboo – Like it or Not: A Review

In the latest hip-hop video to be released on the Kenyan scene, we find members of Ukoo Flani collaborating with notorious emcee Bamboo, who recently returned to the motherland after a rather long stint in the States.

“Like it or Not” is the new video from Ukoo Flani, produced by Phoenix Records. In it, Guru Gang, Bamboo and Sharama dice up lyrics that speak of their struggle coming up in Kenya and how tired of being broke they are.

Bamboo has mastered the art of easing from autotune chants that sound pretty last decade, to gangsta rap to a crooning not dissimilar to Drake’s. With Rick Ross grunts and a physique to boot, Guru Gang instead puts on a show with his proud African accoutrements while telling us: “this is ebola-flow, you can feel the sickness”; we will assume his usage of the word correlates to the slang meaning of ‘sick’.

Credit must undoubtedly be handed to the producers for taking the video a notch higher with clean, albeit quite bright, lighting and use of props. Though we have to ask: what’s with the tyre that rolls through the clips? Does it have a special symbolic meaning?

When it comes to the video vixens these are chicks that dare not disappoint and do pretty much what every video vixen has done in every hop-hop video for the last decade. They lick their lips seductively, shake their hips invitingly and cozy up to the singers to underline their irresistible manliness. The unsung hero of the clip is the vixen getting a tattoo who still manages to bat her eyelashes at the camera, and smiles unflinching.

The reception of the song and video has so far been positive. The song is set to be a Kenyan hustler’s anthem for those on the daily grind and a video to get in the mood for an interesting night out.
