How to: Strike a Pose
With the rising popularity of Facebook photo albums,Twitpics and the mother of them all—Instagram; social media users are constantly challenged to come up with better ways and angles of presenting themselves through photography. Established model and Fashion Editor, Charity Namnyak Odupoy, must be Nairobi’s queen of poses. So much that designer, Katungulu Mwendwa, recently
selected Odupoy to model her latest collection, Dinka Translation. From Odupoy’s eyes which smize, à la Tyra, to her classy
avant-garde model poses, it’s hard to pinpoint just what it is about Nyamnyak that makes many stylists, photographers and designers select her as a muse. She’s been featured in many high fashion magazine shoots and the fashion film: “You are It”.
A great pose will be achieved through the model-photographer chemistry according to Odupoy. “You need to understand where a photographer is coming from, and give them the angle (literally and artistically) they want.” As for the queens and kings of selfies and random homemade albums, she advises: “First find your best side by identifying whether you mostly tend to take images from your right or left side. After that, identify a good camera angle towards your best side and before the shot, take your chin down as that will always make your face more appealing.”
