Just A Band Featured in Fela Kuti’s RED HOT + FELA reworkings
‘Africa’s super-nerdy electronic music/art collective,’ reads Just A Band’s Twitter profile. They are Nairobi’s finest when it comes to band’s oozing coolness and inimitable aesthetic. Well, that must be the reason why they are the only chosen band/act from East Africa to be featured in the latest remaking of Fela Kuti’s recordings: “RED HOT + FELA”.
JAB has been featured in two out of the 13-tracked “RED HOT + FELA”. On the first “Who No Know Go Know”, they collaborated with American rapper Childish Gambino, a multi-talented artist who’s also celebrated for being part of the writers behind TV comedy, 30 Rock. And on “Gentleman”, JAB joins forces with Chance the Rapper, American rapper from Illinois who shot to fame in 2013, following the release of his debut duo mixtapes. Other artists featured on “RED HOT + FELA” include Angelique Kidjo, ?uestlove (The Roots), M1 (Dead Prez), tUnE-yArDs, Baloji, Spoek Mathambo, Nneka, Kronos Quartet, Tony Allen among others. The album will be released by Knitting Factory Records on 15 October in UK, and will hopefully soon be making its way towards Africa, where the legend of Fela was born.
Its release will coincide with Fela Kuti’s 75th birthday anniversary with uniting an eclectic, collaborative roster of artists from the USA and Africa in the name of AIDS awareness. All the profits from the album will go into helping combat AIDS via Red Hot, an AIDS awareness organization, currently partnering with cross-genre collaborators.
