Throwback Thursday: Lost School Club Bangers
Remember these?
Anybody who ever set foot in a Kenyan club in the noughties now laments the death of the lost school. We all remember running to the dance floor when jams like “Yeah!” by Usher and Lil’ Jon, and “Lean Back” by Fat Joe started to play. Well, this was also the time when local music started to really grab a hold alongside the Western produced stuff in having major club play. We look back at some of the massive hits that were our very own.
1. Kiasi - Jua Cali
Calif Records made a few hits down the years. Kiasi was one of the jewels of their crown, a wonderful effort of story telling by the main man of Genge.
2. Compe - Bamboo
One of Kenya’s real Hip-Hop legends, Bamboo had a major club record with this magnificent track.
3. Fire - East Africa Bashment Crew
No party was a party until this collaboration between Necessary Noize and Ugandan Bebe Cool rocked the joint.
4. Githurai - Mr Googs and Vinnie Banton ft Mr. Lenny
This effort put Githurai on the map.
5. Ninanoki - Nameless ft Amani
Nameless remains a major player in the industry today, with his unique sound. Here he teams up with the effervescent Amani to produce one of the great Kenyan club hits.
