Kizomba, the art of connection

People in Nairobi are increasingly looking for new things to do around the capital to an unprecedented degree. Activities Nairobians are searching for are those that won’t take up too much time and money but will keep them active and in shape. One such activity gaining popularity is Kizomba, a dance born in Angola in the 80’s characterised by very close and sensual movements between partners. UP Magazine caught up with Marion Munga, a dance teacher here in Nairobi to find out more about the dance which is all the rage.

What is Kizomba?

African tango! There so many ways you can explain it but I think that’s the best way.

Has it been received well by Nairobians?

Yes actually pretty well. I held a workshop and got good responses. Its still growing but I think people like it.

Do you have to be a really good dancer to try? Can anyone do it?

No, anyone can. Dance is just a skill so all it takes is learning and practice.

Is it a good way to exercise?

It is! Dance generally is. Not only that, its also so much fun especially for couples. It enhances connection. But even if you don’t have a partner we can find some for you. In dance the men lead and the women follow so you learn how to communicate.

The movements are quite sensual, is the dance not for the faint hearted?

Well, the dance is from Angola and the work ‘Kizomba’ means party. Originally it wasn’t very sensual but ideally it can be. I think its been commercialised to be sensual. But yes you have to be a bit bold to try it out, you need to let go to be able to dance.

How often can people take Kizomba lessons?

Once a month I hold workshops but I generally teach different dances each workshop like salsa for example. But if people want, I can get them contacts of people who teach Kizomba on a weekly basis.

Are lessons affordable?

Yes the weekly lessons are KES 500 an hour and workshops, which are two hours, are KES 1000.
