Movie Review: Strength of a Woman- A moving story on the struggle of a mother and daughter
Teenage Julia (Rose K Njoroge) cannot afford time for extracurricular high school activities after school but is distracted, pondering on how she needs to go relieve her mother on her hawking job. PickPoint Production’s Strength of a Woman illuminates the not only affectionate but understanding relationship between mother and daughter. Both are battling with individually specific huddles albeit originating from the same source- the man of the house.
The tale is an intergenerational one; a journey of on the one hand a woman whose marriage, an emotionally and physically abusive one, is more than unbearable but she cannot bear the thought to live. Although she might have drawn the short straw, gotten the raw end of the deal by committing to a till death do us part union, her aspirations for how her life ought to have spurn out are no motivation to fight on. The dream she has for her teenage daughter breaking free is what drives her.
It is a story of Julia, who is burdened and drained by the plight of her mother but at the same time is relentlessly brave in the face of her father; a man who is all too willing to see her cut short her education (one he has not sponsored) for a marriage that will bring in dowry for his disposal.
Strength of a Woman is a film based on true life events; a vivid portrayal of how women in abusive relationships, deemed to be the weak ones, can overcome through an acknowledgement and acceptance of the power they hold. Through the parallel yet so narrowly related journeys of both mother and daughter one is moved by the realization of the kind of pain and humiliation that can be faced, worst of all in an intimate circle that should be the source of joy but not oppression- the family unit. It is however a celebration of the courage exhibited in putting up a fight, demanding one’s justice.
