Sauti Sol up for yet Another 2015 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) Fete
Kenya’s favourite boy turned man-band, Sauti Sol is delighted yet again this year after being nominated for the 2015 MTV Africa Music Awards KwaZulu-Natal 2015 (MAMA) in two categories: Best Group in Africa and Best Song (SURA YAKO).
After winning the Best African act in the 2014 MTV EMA(the first Kenyan band ever to win an MTV Best African Act Award), the big news came right after Sauti Sol’s conclusion of a successful two-week American Tour dubbed #SautiSolRoad2BET (which followed Sauti Sol’s BET Awards 2015 nomination for Best International Act - Africa).
On June 11th, the MAMA nominations announcement shook the social media here in Kenya with Sauti Sol fans sending in congratulatory notes. The nominations were announced at a star-studded reception at Harem, Johannesburg, South Africa attended by a host of nominees, artists, celebrities and media.
Celebrating the extraordinary evolution of African achievement, this year’s MAMA recognises contemporary artistes and trailblazers in a range of music and lifestyle categories including Song of the Year. A total of 70 nominees were revealed at the event, across 13 different categories.
Speaking on new MTV nomination, Sauti Sol members asserted, “We are honoured to be nominated as the Best Group in Africa, especially in the wake of completing production of our upcoming third album: Live and Die in Afrika to be released in 2015. We are very happy to see Sura Yako nominated as Africa’s Best Song – it’s viral #LipalaDance brought us close to our fans across Africa, and we continue to get feedback from around the globe everyday. We thank you all for the love and support!”
The song that went viral and got Africa dancing, saw Nigerian star Iyanya jump in on the remix. The winners for the MTV Africa Music Awards KwaZulu-Natal 2015 will be revealed during the live TV broadcast on 18th July.
The ceremony will take place at the Durban International Convention Centre (Durban ICC), KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa on the same day and will broadcast live across Africa on MTV Base (DStv channel 322), MTV (DStv channel 130) and BET (DStv channel 129) at 21:00 CAT. The show will also be transmitted worldwide on partner stations and content platforms including BET International from 18th July.
