The Drummer Queen’s Second Album: MDQ representing Hip Hop
There’s no stopping the eccentric Muthoni the Drummer Queen – she remains a determined artist who’s so keen on pushing the envelope of music creativity. She owns and manages one of Africa’s most successful monthly music festivals, Blankets & Wine; so she is not your average musician. She’s actually a monster of a brand; a colossal creative entrepreneur on the continent with so much to teach the music world. She’s a perfect example of how artists should successfully balance their careers as entrepreneurs, yet she remains grounded and determined on making great spirited music for her fans.
One thing for sure is that you just never know what she’s about to hit you with. She recently released her eponymous sophomore album “MDQ” which was completely sold out, exclusively to Standard Digital Media, way before its release. Every week since its release, fans have been getting hit with some heavy bass on most of the tracks, which are hip hop. The second single “Game Changer” has an amazing beat and we hear Muthoni pour her soul out about how she feels regarding the industry. Reggae lovers will definitely resonate well with “Get Up” where she encourages her fans to keep moving regardless of setbacks.
The deep and spoken word poetry-induced “Re-Conditioned” shows that Muthoni’s potential can introduce her to a whole new fan base. The album is executively produced by DJ Cortega and produced/engineered by Swiss producers: Jean “Hook” Geissbuhler and Greg “GR” Escoffey, explains why it has a very international edge to it. The mastering is on point. DQ stays dedicated and spends a lot of her time in studio tweaking, perfecting and churning out new tunes that will eventually become party anthems. Her first album “The Human Condition” hit the streets in 2009 with club jams such as “Mikono Kwenye Hewa” and “Welcome to the Disco”. The 2012 hit with Octopizzo, “Vile Inafaa” set her a class apart from your regular urban artist; she’s got that je ne sais quoi vibe.
Many will ask - is Muthoni a rapper, a drummer or a singer? Find out.
