Throwback Thursdays: Tattu
Tattu is a three piece group comprising Angela “Rabbo” Ndambuki, Debbie Asila and Angela ‘Shinde’ Mwandanda.
Before Tattu came to be, Angela Ndambuki and Debbie Asila were members of Rada, a performing quartet based at the Phoenix Theatre. They were later joined by “Shinde”.
Before their rise to stardom, they featured as dancers in Nameless music video’s for Mannerless, Megarider and Majitu. Unfortunately, Nameless eventually dropped them in favour of other dancers and ‘Rabbo’, Debbie and ‘Shinde’ went on to form Tattu.
Tattu’s rise to fame was propelled by their hit song Teso released in 2003. Following Teso’s success, the trio went on to release a string of other hit songs like Haiya, Songea, Napepea, Solophobia and Parapanda.
It’s been ages since Tattu released anything and though they have never officially declared the group’s dissolution, the three have gone on to pursue their own solo projects.
Angela Ndambuki who studied Law at the University of Nairobi, went on to become the CEO of the Performing Rights Society of Kenya, (PRISK) an organization that collects royalties on behalf of composers, publishers, authors and arrangers. She made a comeback to the music industry last year with the song Ni Wewe featuring Big Soul. She is currently pursuing a Masters in Law at Edinburgh University.
Debbie on the other hand, went on to become a presenter at KISS FM, and she also worked in the marketing department of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK). She recently relocated to the US.
Like “Rabbo”, Angela Mwandanda also made a brief comeback in 2013 with the release of First to Say Goodbye.
We now leave you with the best of Tattu from back in the day. Enjoy!
