Parodies are often hilarious! And they aren’t restricted to music videos only. Parodies can be impersonations of other original works like films, adverts and tv shows among many other works. And some people have amassed a huge following online due to their parodies. For instance Bart Baker who parodies popular music videos has more than 7 million YouTube subscribers. Kenyans haven’t been left out either. Check out these hilarious parodies by Kenyans.
- Charles Bukeko - Idi Amin Parody
Charles Bukeko is more known for his role as Papa Shirandula in the TV series of the same name. However, he has also featured in a couple of advertisements as well. You remember the Coca-Cola advert, don’t you? But in case you missed it, he also featured in an advert for Vodacom in which he parodies Idi Amin. Check it out below.
- Kajairo - Mjengo Man
Kajairo is possibly the pioneer of Kenyan parody music videos. Some of the artists he has parodied include: Elani, P-Square and Bamboo among many others. It’s difficult to pick one parody from his huge catalogue but we settled on his parody of Sauti Sol’s Gentleman. Check it out below.

- DJ Khaled- Hold you Down Kenyan Parody
DJ Khaled’s Hold you Down in which he collaborated with various artists garnered a lot of notoriety because of the “Say my name baby….You smart” section. And parody artists love notoriety. - Sleepy David- Ojuelegba Parody
Wizkid’s Ojuelegba was one of 2015’s biggest songs. It was so massive that he even did a remix with Drake and Skepta. Kenya’s very own Khaligraph Jones also did a remake of the song titled Open Doors. Ojuelegba was that good. And comedian Sleepy David took a swipe at the song too. Only his version is a parody that pokes fun at ladies from Nyeri. Check it out below.

Like Kajairo, Eric Omondi has done numerous parodies as well. Ranging from Obama to P-Square, the popular comedians parody list is endless. Nabeba Mawe is a parody of Diamond’s Nasema Nawe. - Tha Stony Whichi
If you’re on WhatsApp you’ve probably heard this one already. The song that parodies the “stone which the builder rejected” song was widely shared on WhatsApp as an audio file. However, did you know it had a video too? Check it out below.
- Redykulass- Trust Condom Ad Parody
Redykulass were perhaps the pioneers of contemporary Kenyan comedy. The group comprised Walter Mong’are, Tony Njuguna and John Kiare. Besides comedy, the trio also did brilliant impersonations of prominent figures like politicians. You remember Walter Mongare’s (Nyambane) imitations of President Daniel Arap Moi, don’t you? Check out this parody by them of a Trust condom advert from back in the day. It’s funny!
- Jaymo Ule Msee Feat Usiku Sacco- Nerea
Nerea by Sauti Sauti Sol & Amos & Josh stirred a lot of controversy last year due to the pro-life nature of its lyrics. The socially conscious song addressed the sensitive issue of abortion. And Jaymo Ule Msee & Usiku Sacco capitalized on the ripples the song was causing by releasing a parody. Unlike the original, the singing is so awful it’s hilarious! Give it a listen below.
