Kaya Kollektive In Concert Thursday Nite Live @ Choices presented by Roots Int

Weekend Wishlist Kaya Kollektive In Concert Thursday Nite Live @ Choices presented by Roots Int

Kaya Kollektive emerged from an event hosted by Kaya Kenya in March of 2015, where artists were invited to play at an experimental jam session. Over 20 musicians attended the session and great music emerged from the gig. As a result, a group of artists decided to form the Kaya Kollektive and were soon commissioned to perform a live funk set at the UP Live Off the Rails event; which was a huge success.

The band includes Ronjey on drums, who is a regular feature of the Nairobi cultural scene and whose strength of rhythm and dynamism, holds and drives the band together. He is accompanied on the bass by Mbaluka; another familiar face to Thursday Night live.

Finally in the rhythm section is Checkmate, a multi-talented beat boxer, percussionist and rapper, who adds a succinct edge to the originality of the band. On lead and rhythm guitars is the Lebanese duo of Charif and Fouad. Multi-instrumentalists and electronic geniuses, Charif and Fouad play a myriad of African melodies and funk rhythms.

No funk band is complete without horns; Dennis and Jackson of the DJV Brass Trio take time out of the Salvation Army and the Conservatoire to funk up your life! Finally, on lead vocals is the creative director of Kaya Kenya, Matthew Swallow, who brought the band together and is seeking to develop Kaya Kollektive into a full alternative orchestra.
