Nyege Nyege is back this September 2nd - 4th with an even more massive line-up. North, West, South and East Africa are all sending their underground music legends to come and represent the best of what contemporary African music has to offer: kuduros, kwaito, Afro house, hiplife, Tuareg rock, cosmic synths from Niger, Arab tech, Moroccan bass, zouk bass, soukous, balani, funana, and Swahili trap and Tigrinian blues to name some of the genres that will be represented by the founders and pioneers of each respective style.

The event, which is only in his second edition, has already created hype all over the world thanks to its forward-looking cultural perspective, exceptional location and superb line-up. Right on the source of the river Nile – more precisely on the sand of the Nile Discovery Resort beach in Jinja – Nyege Nyege will gather together more than 50 international acts.

The festival site is surrounded by over four acres of lush green tropical forests and open spaces interlaced with surrealist concrete sculptures, hidden pathways and follies.

Nyege 2016 will also be the location for the sequel of ‘Nyege Nyege island’ shot by Wakaliwood productions in the previous edition. Expect the same delicious afro-fusion cuisine great drinks at local prices, ongoing film screenings, custom made afro-futuristic decorations and many more surprises to come along the way.

THE NYEGE NYEGE SURVIVAL GUIDE

Your guide to the year’s biggest festival is here. Nyege Nyege is just a couple of weeks away and the Nairobi Crew is going to be massive! Nyege Nyege takes place on Nile Beach in Jinja, and we’ve got you covered on everything you need to know before you get there. Incredible acts are coming from all around the globe for this September 2/3/4, three days of music, madness and magic!

GET YOUR PAPERS
x Tickets can be purchased from Mookh or Ticketsasa. A three day pass with free camping is only 4,000 KES!
x If you are a Kenya Citizen or Resident or have an EA Visa don’t sweat it. All other nationalities will need to buy a Visa at the border for 50 USD.
x You need a yellow fever vaccination certificate to get back from Uganda to Kenya, sometimes even the other way around. So check yourself and get one unless you want to move to Uganda (not too bad). Vaccines in Kenya will cost you around 1,500 KES at city hall or 3,000 KES at the border.
x Don’t bring masses of cash, that is always a festival no-no. MPesa works in select Mpesa booths in Jinja town, otherwise Jinja has plenty of places to exchange - the current rate is about 100 KES to 330 UGX. Money changers (look for ones with an official badge) at the Ugandan/ Kenyan border also give good rates.

GET YOUR RIDE
You can make it to Jinja by air, bus or car. Flights come in to Entebbe airport, and the festival is just off the road from the main highway and bus stop.
x By bus - Easy Coach, Modern Coast, Mash Poa, Kampala Coach and Simba all have routes to Jinja. Or you can start the party early and get on the Nairobi Underground Party Bus for 4,900 KES.
x By car - this is the age of google maps, but if you’re old school there’s a legit map on the Nyege Nyege Site. The drive is about the same as from Nairobi to coast, so budget for fuel accordingly!
x By plane - Fly 540, KQ, RwandAir and Fly Sax all have flights from Nairobi to Entebbe, it’ll set you back about 20,000 KES!

GET YOUR KIT TOGETHER & GET A ROOM
This is mostly for the campers in the crew, and we hope there will be many as what is a festival without the mayhem of being all mish mashed together? All campers get their own wristband and allocated spot, tents can be rented for 2,000 bob when you get on site as well. The camping section will have 12 toilets and 8 showers reserved solely for people with an official camping wristband. Current forecasts predict three days of sunshine during the festival so there’s no excuse not to camp!

Food:
Food diversity is an important part of the festival so there is a wide selection ranging from local cuisine to international including Jamaican barbecue, Japanese, Mexican, pastries, coffee, fresh juices and smoothies. Prices at Nyege Nyege are very vibe friendly with 90 bob beers, a rolex is 50 bob, jamaican jerk chicken 300 bob, icecream 100 bob, whiskey shot 150 bob, gin bottle 700 bob. For campers we also recommend that if camping you bring a small jiko, teapot and tea, fruit, nuts and biltong. From experience we can tell you that you can survive for days on that diet!
