Another Kenyan Telenova—KONA, to hit your screens!
It started out mildly with Higher Learning. Remember the drama series about university students and relations around campus? After its successful seasons, came Siri, then Mali, then Lies that Bind, and now we have Kona. It’s a series of Kenyan TV shows that are certainly out to prove Africa and the world wrong—Kenyan actors/screen writers are indeed as talented and are starting to show it on long-running TV Shows. Most of the mentioned shows are still running and are broadcasted on Africa Magic as well as local TV shows, therefore reaching millions of viewers across Africa.
The latest, KONA, will be showing on Africa Magic too. The East African telenova is about the Oyange family who are battling for survival after the tragic death of business tycoon, Richard Oyange. He leaves behind a wife, Ayira (Muthoni Gathecha), two daughters; Pamela (Brenda Wairimu), Julia (Nini Wacera) and son Wanjala (Lwanda Jawar). Julia inherits her late dad’s boxing gym, and enlists the help of her adopted brother, Wanjala to help her manage the business. Wanjala, a one-time boxing star is kicked out from home by his dad after a scandal. He must go back to boxing while trying to deal with a sick daughter, and a wife that wants nothing to do with him. Will he step up and face his demons now? The storyline explores the complexity of familial relationships and internal conflict including love and betrayal, success and failure. And we believe, there’s enough glitz and grit to keep the audience hooked.
