Kevin Maina - How to Maintain the Perfect ‘Fro

Kevin Maina (also known K1) is not an unfamiliar name in the industry and one thing that stands out is his well-maintained ‘fro. His infamy spans from his well known character Makmende to his new role in Kenya’s latest T.V Show “GLEE” – Groove Theory. Makmende is a fictional Kenyan superhero character which has enjoyed a popular resurgence after an adptation by Kenya’s musical group Just A Band in the music video for their song Ha-He on the album, 82 (Released in 2009). Groove Theory is a musical drama series directed for the stage and shot for television. It is a co-production of Kijiji Entertainment and Zuku, and airs on Zuku Africa. He is also a prolific deejay and entertainer.

In order to launch our new 140 character interview series, we decided to catch up with Maina to ask him the question that everybody want to know the answer to. How does he maintain that perfect fro?

So, here goes:

What type of products do you use?

My hair does itself though I did start using conditioner about a month ago. Thankfully my hair is naturally soft. Sometimes I use this spray made for styling dreads.

How do you maintain Afro hair?

I wash it with conditioner and moisturize after with some oil.

How do you maintain the Afro shape?

When I get up in the morning, the sides are patted down. I use a comb to shape the hair. There’s nothing complex to it, no afro shaping instrument

How do I grow an Afro?

Be true to who you are. Afros suit some people but not all. Some hair locks easily some doesn’t, there is no formula, take care of your hair with conditioner & keep it moist!

So now you know. “How to 140″ is a new interview series featuring exclusively on the UPnairobi webpage in which we interview famous personalities through twitter in no more than 140 characters on the question of the day.
