Nanyuki on a Shoestring

Ngare Ndare Forest Trust: A community run trust set up to protect the surrounding indigenous forest. There are waterfalls, ice-cold plunge pools and the only canopy walk in the whole of East Africa. From here it is possible to get a bird’s eye view of rhinos, elephants and buffalo. The forest can be explored on foot or on a bicycle and there are guides available and two campsites if you wish to stay longer.

Mau Mau caves: Combine a trek, a bit of history and a freezing dip, all for the price of a guide and a picnic. Discovered in 1953 by MauMau rebels, this is an amazing place with a magical atmosphere. Situated about ten kilometres walk from Bantu lodge, this is a half day stroll for everyone young and mature.

Trout Tree: A trip to Nanyuki is not complete without stopping for lunch at this unique restaurant. Nestled in a huge tree overlooking an extensive trout farm this is the place to go if you love your trout cooked any and every way possible and want to give the kids some space to run around and play. While waiting for lunch to be served have a wander through the trout pools and down to the river.

Lily Pond Arts Centre: Enjoy an authentic Irish bar and a delightful arts centre, all rolled in to one. Boasting to be the “only Irish bar on the equator” this is a delightful place to stop and have lunch, take in some of the art and relax after a half day hike or game drive.

Kongoni Camp: The bar and restaurant are a favourite amongst the many locals involved in the nearby flower farms. While the accommodation and spa may not fit into the “shoestring” category, the food is renowned amongst those in the know, the nyama choma incredibly tender and the atmosphere jovial especially on weekends.

Sportsmans Arms: An evening favourite amongst the many British army troops stationed nearby. If you want a slice of edgy nightlife in Nanyuki this is the place to be on a Saturday night. Weekdays it’s the ideal place to hit at the end of your day’s activities for a beer and some interesting people watching.

Nanyuki Town: In town you will find a Nakumatt, adventure stores and agents who can help you rent bikes and plan itineraries, small local bars butcheries and everything you would expect from a place of its medium size.
