Top Ten Tracks We Loved This Month
Once in a while, we here at Up Magazine love to sit back at our basement office desks, kick back and talk music- most of the times we agree to disagree on what hits we felt we loved in a certain month or what sound the city of Nairobi is currently feeling.
So, here is our top songs’ list for this month in no particular order. Join the debate and tell us whether you agree with us or not.
Bendera- Collo
King wa Rap, Collo dropped this track last week in a private listening party backed by the live band magic of The Watooz Band, and we loved it. In anticipation of his album due to be released soon, this patriotic song on a hip hop beat has never sounded any good. The track features Wawi, Nesa and Kayamba Afrika. Already you know what to expect from Collo’s album.
Kizunguzungu- Amani
An awesome video, and a return of Amani to the mainstream media, we totally loved her on thi video. The dresses were amazing too. (Read our take on the video here)
Tudunde-Nonini
Also another come back track for RnB star Didge, teaming with Nonini, this party song will get you to the dance floor fast.
Ingoma Lo- Saint Evo
What is any month without a newly released #EquatorialHouse track? Saint Evo, teaming up with the musical prowess of Dumac and Inami, gave us something to nod to and to lift our hands to even higher. (if you missed our review read it here)
Sasa- Jaya
East Africa unites once again when Jaya got Tanzania’s Lady Jaydee on the ‘sasa’ track. Ignoring the ridiculous behavior of our respective governments, the Tanzanian superstar and Kenyan star have created a wonderful track. The well shot video and the audio magic of Ennovator, made this a worthy listen this month. (read our take here)
Future- Moseh Drumist
Deep and laid back house music, combined with soulful drums, Moseh Drumist caught our attention in his quest to create the perfect mash up sound. (our Staff writer Alex Roberts did a great review on this. Read it here)
Jump PYDU- Octopizzo
The visuals were amazing and indeed the Namba Nane star went all out, teaming with Dj Mustard on this great track. we cant say much about it but we guarantee any person out there who ever said they were not a fan of Octo will change their minds once they give this a listen.
Oye EP- Winnie Chris
Saint Evo proved his magic again on this other equatorial house track. We thought the original mix was the business till we heard the extended club mix. We can not honestly say which one we prefer. However we can tell you that Winnie Chris will become one of the biggest stars our country will ever produce.
Jinku- Cham Thundi
Luo and English flow on a Hip Hop beat, we loved the creativity and the different, yet unique sound. And indeed as Cham Thundi says, “This has been a long time coming.” Gini wasekao. Mr. Jakes re-branding to Jinku is evident in this track and as he said in a previous article “New year new things.”
Today- Atwal
The Ndombolo feel to this club banger hit got us dancing hard. It is a relative new and unique sound too and the prowess of Atwal, Rain De’ and Kaxi truly shone on this track. Atwal Adwok remains one of our favourite producers from the Nairobi area and this track only proves Kagwe Mungai right, Atwal is one of the producers to watch.
