Tusker’s New “Twende Kazi” Reality Show

Most people associate the 91 year old Tusker beer brand with either jovial times at their favorite nightclub or with the singing competition, Tusker Project Fame. Ranking as the brand’s “most audacious investment,” the new reality show, Twende Kazi, will demonstrate Kenya’s resilience during the 50th anniversary of independence. Prepare to open a bottle of Tusker in the coming months, to cheer the 25 East African teams who will embark across the world in 13 countries for 50 days.

Tusker revealed the new series this past week, but the show will not air until February 2014. Twende Kazi will feature 14 well known Kenyans from music and sports, while 14 more Kenyans will be selected from December 13 2013 to February 13 2014. In total, 50 Africans from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania will race as relay pairs across Africa and Europe. Relying on local communities to help find their way and complete assignments, these teams will only carry the clothes they wear.

In celebration of Kenya’s 50th year of independence, Kenya Breweries Limited’s Corporate Affairs Director, Eric Kiniti, said the purpose of the show is “To demonstrate the resilience of the Kenyan spirit to achieve whatever it sets out to do. This show is tailored to reflect Kenya’s coming of age.”

With 50 days to traverse valleys, deserts, and the Mediterranean sea, each team will race to deliver a bottle of Tusker Lager to the Kenyan rugby player, Humphrey Khayange, in London. Kiniti added this is not only to symbolize East Africans coming together, but also to “Ignite the belief that we can do anything.”

The pairs will have a celebrity and an ordinary mwananchi (local). The dynamics and relationships will reveal the “Never say die” attitude of Kenyans as well as other East Africans.

By overcoming immense challenges through teamwork, Twende Kazi will reveal the united strength of Kenyans that led to independence. 50 years later, Kiniti said “A little bit of Kenya can go a long way. So when they say, ‘It is impossible,’ we say, we’re Kenyan.”
