Kaya is a Kiswahili word that means home or homestead. African Kaya used to be known as www.foodieinthedesert.com but ever since Wangeci Wandere moved from Kakuma to Nairobi she changed along with her address.

She considers her food blog as her online home for recipes, tips and tricks that aim to make anyone’s home better.

 

There are many food bloggers on the Kenyan foodie scene but not many have the culinary experience that Wangeci Wanderi possesses, having lived in two very different countries in matters or cuisine and palates, she meshes the two and the result is a wonderful blog like no other.

A foodie at heart Wangeci Wanderi describes her experience with starting to cook and appreciate food as a result of being in the kitchen with her mother. She cooked alongside her mother as she prepared meals for the family. She attributes her knowledge of the craft to the fact that when she was a little girl her mother bought her a small jiko (a ceramic charcoal powered stove) about the size of a big tin of Milo, it came complete with miniature utensils, a sufuria (cooking pot), a frying pan, a wok, a karai (a chapati tawa) a slotted spoon and a mwiko (wooden cooking spoon) . Her mother would prepare meals for the family , then give her a little piece of everything so that she could cook alongside her with her miniature jiko.
