This model, fashion designer Liz Ogumbo is one of the sassiest musicians to step onto the Kenyan music scene, bringing a new unseen energy of soul style, elegance and charisma. In this debut album, KenSoul, Ogumbo explores her traditional background as a Luo girl and garnishes it with her vast travel experiences. Truth be told, when you first hear KenSoul its her sultry voice that catches you at first, but then you will notice her eloquence in topics such as love, life and politics. On ‘La Coeur Qui Cri L’amour’ – (The Heart that Cries Love) she delves into a laidback French neo soulful call for love. She humorously also addresses the issue of skinny weight associated with the international modeling industry with the songs ‘Awete’ and ‘Big Ass in Blue Jeans’. Her deep poetry side is heard on ‘Ubuntu’ where she stresses the importance of family, community and doing for each other. She then goes back home, to Kisumu, with the guitar looped ‘Maro Pa More’ a song about marriage setbacks, here she is aided by rapper extraordinaire Zubz. The track ‘Searching’ is a happy love reggae tune featuring MXO while the rock induced ‘Give Them Hope’ is proof that Liz Ogumbo can sing in all styles. She doesn’t leave you without making you dance on the Swahili chakacha track ‘Mambo Jambo’. The production on this album is superb and done by renowned South African producers RJ Benjamin and Baba Buntu.
This album is for those who are able to see the fun side of life and it will sure open your heart to a new dimension of Kenyan music. For more on Liz Ogumbo’s music please visit www.lizogumbo.com |
